Depart the pier for a scenic 45-minute drive along the autostrada with magnificent views of the Bay of Naples. You’re headed to Mt Vesuvius, the active volcano that buried Pompeii in AD 79.
You will be dropped off at the 3,000-foot level of Mt Vesuvius. From here, set off on a hike to the volcano’s crater. The steep gravel path to the crater is approximately 600 yards long. You’ll feel the energy of this active volcano as you walk across hardened lava, where crevices still exude fumes and heat. The hike takes approximately 50 minutes roundtrip, and you’ll have approximately one hour total at Mt Vesuvius to take in the stunning views of Naples and its bay. Your guide will also share the fascinating geological history and significance of Mt Vesuvius.
Afterward, stop at a local cameo factory to shop for handmade seashell and coral jewelry, including intricately carved brooches, rings, and bracelets.
At the Pompeii ruins, you’ll discover the archeological excavations of a lost city buried deep beneath the ash from Mt Vesuvius. Explore the grounds on a two-hour guided tour of the city. Plaster casts mark the positions of the fallen, who were swiftly overcome by volcanic ash. The highlights include stunning frescoes and elaborately detailed mosaic-inlaid floors decorating the interiors of upscale villas. Pompeii was known as a vacation town for the wealthy.
Following your visit, return to Salerno.
Notes:
If the Mt Vesuvius site is closed due to weather, an orientation drive of Naples will be substituted. Traffic can be unpredictable; your patience is greatly appreciated if a delay extends the tour duration. Participants must be able to walk for 1.5 miles at Pompeii and 1 mile at Mt. Vesuvius uphill and downhill on rough terrain. Additionally, the coach parking area is a 15-minute walk (each way) to/from the entrance. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, gravel, grass, and steps. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking. Pompeii is not wheelchair accessible. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Backpacks and large bags are not allowed inside the Pompeii excavation site; lockers are not available. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience. Lunch is not included. You will have time to purchase a snack at your own expense during the tour.
