This transfer may suit you if you would like to explore on your own. It consists of a motorcoach ride from the ship to the railway station in Civitavecchia and a 60-minute train ride to the Vatican City's St Peter's Station. The train coach escort will advise you of the pick-up time for the return journey. You will have approximately 6½ hours to shop and explore independently in the Vatican and in Rome. A city map is provided and public transportation in Rome is readily available.
Optional upgrade: You can maximize your day in Rome with a hop-on, hop-off bus ticket. Purchase the upgrade on the train journey to Rome (when available). The hop-on, hop-off bus stops at many of the main archaeological sites and historical landmarks. The buses run continuously arriving at each stop about every 20 to 30 minutes.
Notes:
Guide service, taxi transfers, entrance fees and lunch are not included in the transfer price. It is your responsibility to be at the meeting point at the given return time. An English-speaking escort will be aboard the transfer motorcoach and the train to answer questions en route. Travel time to the Vatican is approximately one hour each way. Bring local currency for attractions, meals and shopping, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. This tour is available only to guests whose cruise does not begin or end in Civitavecchia. Travel time by train is approximately one hour each way. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair. There are approximately 50 steps to negotiate from the platform at St Peter's station to the exit, and no elevator. Participants must be able to board the coach for the initial transfer. St Peter's Basilica can close for security reasons at any time without notice; visitors are often required to check large bags, video cameras and bottled water. Modest attire is required for visiting churches or cathedrals; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered; shorts and capri-length pants are not allowed. Expect crowds, lines, and delays at most venues. Ongoing restoration work is often being carried out at Rome's foremost attractions. Most shops are closed in the weekends.
