Three enchanting towns on Croatia's Istrian peninsula await your discovery on this full-day adventure.
Travel 1½ hours through lush, Mediterranean landscapes to the tiny town of Hum, where you'll enjoy a 45-minute walking tour of its highlights. Medieval Hum, where St Jerome's church contains Glagolitic wall writings, was the center of Croatian literary culture beginning in the Middle Ages. Heralded as the smallest town in the world, it still packs a historic punch with stone streets, lovely churches, flower-filled squares and fortified walls.
Your next stop is at the Aura Distillery in Buzet, a short drive from Hum and nestled in northern Istria near the border with Slovenia. A tasting tour is your opportunity to sample Biska -- a special brandy spiced with mistletoe. Taste three types of liqueur, accompanied by a delicious snack of cheeses, locally-baked bread and meats.
A picturesque 40-minute drive away, the hilltop village of Motovun boasts a medieval Old Town enclosed by an inner wall. See the 16th-century bell tower of the Renaissance Church of St Stephen. Take in panoramic vistas of the surrounding lush vineyards and the forest where the region's famous truffles are found. Don't miss the views from the top of the medieval walls, which are now used as walkways and have stunning views across the surrounding vineyards, the Mirna valley and the St Marco truffle forest. After a guided tour, you will have 30 minutes of free time to explore the small shops and galleries. Olive oil produced in the region makes an excellent souvenir that you can enjoy at home.
