Leaving the harbor of Marseille, you will drive to Aix-en-Provence, passing the scenery of southern France en route. This was once the capital of the Provence region and its attractions are many.
First you will set out on a walking tour along the Cours Mirabeau. This wide avenue is shaded by trees and was built in the 1600s on the site of the city's medieval ramparts; its verdant tunnel of foliage protects pedestrians from the heat of the Provençal sun. The aristocratic façades of the old mansions line the Cours and their wrought-iron balconies and finely carved doorways invite the visitor to explore.
You will see a fountain dating back to 1743, particularly noteworthy for producing 93°F water, which the Romans believed had healing properties. Note the different architectural styles of Saint Sauveur Cathedral with a Romanesque nave, a Merovingian baptistery and a Gothic section. These various styles date between the 5th and 17th centuries. Whatever your interest, the ambience of Aix-en-Provence makes for an enjoyable excursion into France. At the end of your walking tour, enjoy some free time before re-boarding your coach for the drive back to Marseille.
