Discover the classic village of St-Rémy-de-Provence -- birthplace of Nostradamus and the magical setting for some of Vincent Van Gogh’s most famous paintings.
Your tour starts with a drive inland to the spot where the village of St Rémy nestles at the foot of the northern slopes of the Alpilles -- a range of arid limestone mountains. Set off on a guided walking tour down winding cobblestone streets shaded by centuries-old plane trees. Along the route, you’ll find charming squares graced with fountains and an atmosphere that is, quite simply, radiant. It was here in 1889 and 1890 that Vincent Van Gogh completed more than 150 paintings and sketches while being treated at a psychiatric hospital. The subjects of many of those works of art, which include Irises, can still be seen in the surrounding countryside -- a landscape of wheat fields, olive groves and cypresses.
St Rémy is also associated with French astrologer and enigmatic forecaster Nostradamus, born here in 1503. His house still stands on Rue Hoche.
Saint-Martin Church, the largest building in town, is another architectural icon with its 14th-century bell tower. The acoustics inside the church are extraordinary, as is its restored organ, which boasts nearly 500 pipes.
You’ll have ample free time to shop for antiques, browse in the outdoor markets, or linger over a glass of wine while savoring Provence’s remarkable cuisine (at your own expense).
Rejoin your guide and coach at the appointed time and location and drive back to the pier in Marseille.
Notes:
