The most intoxicating of all the wines of the Rhône was named after the town of Chateau Neuf. Your coach will take you to the town whose original vineyards were planted on land belonging to the Avignon popes. Your first stop will be at a local winery to taste the yields of age-old tradition.
Then, continue to Avignon, where lunch is served. The city of Avignon is caretaker to the art and culture of the Vaucluse region -- it sprawls along the banks of the Rhône River, surrounded by ramparts and dominated by the massive Dome Rock.
The cathedral and the Palace of the Popes stand atop the rock, towering majestically over the rest of the town. A guided walk brings you to the palace to glimpse the privilege that abounded when France was a major player in the papacy.
Afterward, you will have some free time to explore at your leisure in Avignon.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Travel time to Chateau Neuf is approximately 1½ hours, and the drive from Avignon back to Marseille is also approximately 1½ hours. Corkage policy: Wine purchased on this tour is exempt from the onboard corkage fee (offer limited to one bottle of wine per person). Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience.
