Begin your tour with a motorcoach ride through the Old Port, where the Greeks landed in 600 BC. Here, the cafés, boats and restaurants are classically French.
You'll drive along the Corniche J.F. Kennedy and enjoy the stunning views of its craggy coves and beaches, as well as the offshore islands, including a castle-fortress.
Then, you'll reach Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica for an inside visit -- the most magnificent building of its kind in southern France, built in the mid-1800s in Roman-Byzantine style. It is well worth climbing the 160 steps to look inside. It stands on a limestone spire and offers a glorious 360° view of the city below. The basilica boasts beautiful ex-votos on the walls and a stunning marble statue in the crypt. The view from the lower level is also quite splendid.
A stop at the Old Port affords you about an hour to explore at your leisure before returning to the ship.
Notes:
Travel time to Marseille's city center is approximately 30 minutes each way. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
