Take the scenic route across the island with a stop to see a glass-blowing demonstration at Malta’s crafts village, which is located on the site of an abandoned World War II airfield.
Mdina, known as the Silent City, is Malta’s former capital and is more than 4,000 years old. It is one of Europe’s finest examples of an ancient walled city with a mix of medieval and Baroque architecture. Take time to visit the Mdina Cathedral, stroll through the city’s streets and breathe in the history.
A short drive brings you to Mosta. Discover the fourth-largest unsupported dome in the world and the third largest in Europe, known as the Mosta Dome or, as the locals say, the Rotunda. In 1942, a 200kg bomb pierced the dome and fell among a congregation of more than 300 people, but miraculously did not explode. Your guide will point out to you where the bomb penetrated the dome, and you will see a replica of the bomb in the sacristy.
Admire the panoramic views of Malta en route back to the ship.
Notes:
The Mosta Church is closed on Saturday afternoons, Sundays and holidays and will be viewed from the outside only. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience. Each guest is responsible for returning the headset after the tour; missing or damaged headsets incur a fee of €80. Tour sequence may vary.
