Board a motorcoach for a panoramic drive along Sicily’s mountainous eastern coastline. You’re headed to the Crateri Silvestri and Mt Etna. Along the way, you’ll pass through the villages of Santa Venerina and Zafferana Etnea and enjoy some dramatic coastal views.
A modern cable car whisks you up the southern slopes of Mt Etna, taking 15 minutes to reach an elevation of 8,200 feet. The second part of your adventure begins here.
Hop into a special off-road vehicle driven by an expert who calmly drives up even the most inhospitable terrain. Within 20 minutes, you’ll find yourself at 9,500 feet above sea level. The incomparable panorama before you encompasses the central crater and the historic lava flows that are so characteristic of the landscape of Mt Etna. Here, Mt Etna naturalists are available to assist and can take you to the places where volcanic activity is prevalent while, at the same time, protecting the environment.
Enjoy a typical lunch at a local restaurant before you head back down the mountain to Messina.
Notes:
The cable car capacity is six guests per car; expect delays. The 4x4 vehicle seats 25 guests and may not be exclusive to Holland America Line guests. Mt Etna is an active volcano and erupts frequently; participate at your own risk.
