Travel by motorcoach to the tiny village of Dalyan, home to a small mosque. Here, you’ll board a motorboat that will take you down the river’s winding canals and through a maze of reeds on the Dalyan River Delta. Cotton plantations and fields alternate with little islands covered in reed thickets. During your journey down the river, you will see the famous temple-tombs of the ancient kings carved into the rocky cliffs.
Arriving in ancient Caunos, you will walk up the bare hillside to the ruins of the city, complete with a Roman theatre, baths, and the streets of the port city founded in the 5th century BC.
Continue by boat to Iztuzu Beach, where the endangered Mediterranean loggerhead (Caretta caretta) turtle comes ashore each year to lay its eggs at the Dalyan River Delta. Relax at a local seafood restaurant in Dalyan Village for lunch before returning to Marmaris by motorcoach.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Travel time to Dalyan is approximately 90 minutes by coach. The river cruise on a traditional motorboat is approximately 30 minutes each way. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, a steep incline to the ruins of Caunos and steps (no handrails). Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water.
