The English Lake District -- perhaps the most beautiful corner of England -- is a powerful, timeless landscape of shimmering waters and majestic hills nestling under romantic skies. The landscape painter John Constable declared that the Lake District had "the finest scenery that ever was."
Leaving Liverpool, travel north along the freeway before turning off to continue along a country road to Bowness-on-Windermere. Board the lake steamer for a relaxing cruise on Lake Windermere -- the largest natural lake in England at 12 miles long, a mile wide, and 220 feet deep. It is fed by numerous rivers, set amid beautifully wooded fells, and has a shoreline punctuated by delightful promontories and bays.
Coming ashore at the southern end of the lake, board the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway. Travel in the old-style carriages for a nostalgic journey hauled by steam engine. The steeply graded railway line to Haverthwaite is a pleasant and relaxing journey through the contrasting lake and river scenery of the Leven Valley.
Back on the coach, travel alongside part of Lake Windermere to the village of Bowness. This is one of the oldest recorded settlements on the shores of Windermere, first referenced in 1190. Ferries, launches and waterbuses carry thousands of visitors along the lake each summer. Bowness is a haven of Victorian and Edwardian architecture. Enjoy free time in this delightful lakeside setting and a quick browse in the shops up on the main street.
