Grab your camera and hang on tight for this scenic and exciting four-wheel-drive tour of some of Cyprus's most beautiful mountain villages.
Your inland "safari" begins with a drive into the Troodos Mountain Range, the largest in Cyprus. At 6,400 feet, its highest point, Mount Olympus, supports a winter ski resort on this Mediterranean island.
Your 4WD vehicle goes off-road onto dirt trails, giving you the best views of the region, dotted with tiny picturesque villages. Stop for photos at the beautiful Mesa Potamos Falls to see the pristine mountain water cascade over the rocks; then, continue to the charming summer resort town of Platres for refreshments. Charming hotels and shaded walking trails dot the mountainside with views of the surrounding pear, cherry, apple and peach orchards.
Your next stop is the village of Omodos, where picturesque cobblestone streets wind around a central plaza. Omodos was built around the ancient Monastery of the Holy Cross, which contains many religious artifacts, including a section of the rope that supposedly bound Jesus to the cross. Omodos is also at the center of the country's winemaking region, and you'll have a chance to stop at the Linos Winery to taste some of the excellent local varietals.
Shop for souvenirs and locally made leather goods before the ride back to the pier. Snap some spectacular shots of mountainside orchards and vineyards as you descend to sea level.
