Lipari is the largest of the seven Aeolian Islands and it administers the other islands of Alicudi, Salina, Filicudi, Panarea, Stromboli and Vulcano. They are all of volcanic origin, but feature vastly different natural and manmade landscapes. Lipari's history revolves around the Castello -- a fine natural fortress set on a pedestal-like rhiolitic plateau. Arriving at Marina Corta, you will walk 15 minutes (800 yards) to board your coach; then, a panoramic drive introduces you to the island.
Passing through the villages of Pianoconte and Quattropani, you'll stop at the Quattrocchi viewpoint.
The drive ends in Lipari town, and you will continue exploring on foot. Your guide will lead you to the castle area, which is encircled by ancient walls. Follow the steep lane to the Archeological Museum housed in the former Bishop's Palace. If you are at all interested in Mediterranean archaeology and ancient history, this museum is a must-see, as it contains a collection of finds that is among the most complete in Europe.
The Classical Section houses artifacts from the island's 11th-century BC necropolis. These are beautifully displayed and include a sizable collection of burial urns as well as models of a Bronze Age burial ground and Lipari's necropolis. Upstairs is an impressive array of decorated vases and the museum's treasured collection of Greek theatrical masks -- the most complete of its kind in the world. There are also a number of statuettes of dancers and actors, and some elegant jewelry.
After your visit, your guide will walk back with you to the pier. Guests who wish to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so, but must make their own way back to the ship.
Notes:
There is an approximately 20- to 30-minute uphill walk along the main street to reach the coach.
