If you think a tiny settlement like Lipari couldn't have a world-class museum, think again. From the ship it's a 15-minute walk to the magnificent Archaeological Museum of Lipari. Those interested in Mediterranean archaeology, and the history of the amazing ancient civilizations (Phoenician, Greek, Roman, and Turkish) that have relentlessly shaped our 21st-century life, will appreciate that this museum contains a collection of finds that is truly impressive.
Don't miss the Classical Section, which contains relics from Lipari's incredible necropolis that date back to the 11th century BC. A large collection of burial urns and a model of a Bronze Age burial ground illustrate the remarkable thought and planning that went into burying the dead thousands of years ago. Upstairs, you'll find the most complete display in the world of theater masks from the Greek Civilization, as well as amazing array of decorated vases. There are also a number of BC-era statuettes of dancers and actors, and some elegant jewelry.
Leaving the museum, you'll walk back to the ship with your guide.
Notes:
There is an approximately 15-minute uphill walk to reach the museum. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
