Depart by coach from Livorno's pier and head straight to Portovenere. This famously picturesque village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It hugs the shoreline and its Old Town marches seaward along a narrow peninsula that curves back towards the land. Tour the quaint town with your guide; then, enjoy some free time to explore independently or people-watch along the waterfront.
Next, board the ferry and head north up the Ligurian coastline to reach Monterosso. This is perhaps the most famous of the five villages of the Cinque Terre, and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town is divided into two distinct parts -- San Cristoforo Hill, and the old maritime village protected by a rocky spur. This is the only village with a wide beach and a significant seafront. After your guide points out the highlights of Monterosso, enjoy a snack at a local venue and some more free time to continue your exploration. You can purchase lunch if you wish (at your own expense) and enjoy shopping on your own.
A local train ride brings you to Levanto, where you will board the coach for the drive back to Livorno.
Notes:
Bring a credit card and cash. Lunch is at your own expense. In the event of unfavorable sea conditions, the ferries/boats do not operate along the Cinque Terre coastline; a motorboat ride inside the gulf of La Spezia will be substituted and you will reach Monterosso by train. If you wish to swim at Monterosso, wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, sunscreen and a hat. Cinque Terre is crowded on holidays, and on Sundays in May. The Cinque Terre is a popular destination; expect crowding in the villages. You will likely encounter a long line while waiting to board the boat; boarding is strictly on a first-come, first-served basis. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience. This tour requires extensive walking over uneven surfaces, standing in line and steps. This tour is not accessible for guests using mobility devices such as wheelchairs or scooters.
