In the northwest corner of Tuscany lies the ancient city of Lucca, which started out as a Roman colony in 177 BC and graduated to provincial capital of Tuscany in the Middle Ages.
A 45-minute drive from Livorno will bring you to this gorgeous walled city, where you will set out with your guide on a walking tour through its narrow, winding streets. Once you reach the Church of San Michele, you will be given the option of free time to explore on your own, or remaining with your guide. The guided tour continues to the Church of San Frediano, founded in the 6th century. You will also view the Piazza Anfiteatro -- built upon the remains of an ancient Roman Amphitheatre.
After your free time or guided tour, meet back in Piazzale Verdi to re-board the motor coach.
Head to Pisa, where the coach will park outside the Old Town and you will walk to Miracle Square. A highlight of the day will be a guided tour inside the massive cathedral and the stunning baptistery, and around the outside of the justifiably-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Notes:
Most shops are closed on Sundays and on Monday mornings. An English-speaking escort will accompany the bus for the duration of the tour. Location-specific guides will meet and guide you at each stop. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience. This tour moves at a brisk pace and does not appreciably linger at any one attraction. Guests wishing to visit Pisa or Lucca in a more leisurely way should consider the half-day tours to these cities instead. The cathedral can be closed without notice for a funeral or other religious service. On Sundays, guides are not allowed to provide commentary inside the church; an introduction will be given outside and you will view the inside on your own.
