Car enthusiasts will thrill to the opportunity to ride in the quintessentially Italian vehicle -- a vintage Fiat 500 -- through the sundrenched hills of Tuscany.
Your full-day tour begins with independent exploration of the wonders of Florence. Travel by motorcoach on a 90-minute panoramic drive to Florence, one of Italy's most culturally significant cities and arguably the seat of the Renaissance. Here, you will enjoy three hours of sightseeing on your own and at your own pace. Take in all the key sights or simply sit at a corner café with a foamy cappuccino (at your own expense) and watch the locals go about their day.
Ambitious walkers will have time to see quite a few historic sights: the piazza and the cathedral, which took 14 years to build using a revolutionary method that was later copied for St Peter's in Rome and St Paul's in London; the doors on the east side of the baptistery, so stunning that Michelangelo dubbed them the Gates of Paradise; the Piazza Della Signoria, the political heart of the city; the Palazzo Vecchio open-air museum; the famous Ponte Vecchio bridge; and Piazza Santa Croce - final resting place of such notables as Galileo, Machiavelli and Michelangelo.
At the designated time, hop into a vintage Fiat 500 and celebrate la dolce vita. You'll set off caravan-style as your driver maneuvers along hidden roads lined with medieval castles, olive groves and vineyards. This is a two-hour drive through the Etruscan countryside in true Italian style.
Pause for refreshments at Michelangelo Square, designed in 1869 and noted for its magical views of Florence and the surrounding Arno Valley. Enjoy a frosty gelato while taking in the vistas and photographing the bronze replica of Michelangelo's David.
Your return towards Florence, via an alternative route, provides an equally-entertaining journey, filled with new sights and pleasant panoramas.
Re-join your motorcoach at the Arno River; then, settle back and relax on the picturesque ride back to Livorno and your waiting ship.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. You will not drive the Fiat; a driver is provided.
