A guided walking tour through Ephesus, past its major sights, celebrates the historical significance of this ancient city.
Visit the House of the Virgin Mary, considered by the Vatican to be the final resting place of the mother of Jesus. Set in the Solmissos Mountains, the shrine is nestled among lush foliage, where a curative stream flows through the grounds.
Walk among the ruins of the Basilica of St John, built over the tomb of St John. Frescoes and mosaics remain, and graceful columns hint at the structure’s former grandeur.
Pass through the arched Magnesian Gate and begin a slow, downhill walk to the ruins of the Roman provincial capital. Your guide will highlight pivotal sights such as Hadrian’s Temple, the magnificent Trajan Fountain, the Odeon Theatre, the beautiful Celsus Library and the dramatic Great Theatre.
Returning to Kusadasi, you can choose to shop in town, watch an optional Turkish carpet demonstration, or return to the ship.
Notes:
This excursion can be taken as a standalone tour, but for the best experience should be combined with Istanbul Deluxe Part I & II -- an unforgettable combination and by far the best way to fully experience Turkey’s great cities and the surrounding area. Tour requires extensive walking. Terrain includes uneven and cobblestone surfaces, inclines, and many steps. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Expect dense crowding and congestion at each site. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Bring insect repellent in July and August. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience.
