Explore ancient Istria from seaside to hilltop. Board a coach for the approximately 45-minute drive from Koper to Piran, traveling the length of the Piran Peninsula. The ancient port of Piran and its nearby saltpans have played an important role in Mediterranean trade since Roman times. Piran boasts well-preserved, Venetian-style medieval streets and buildings that rise from the waterfront to the cathedral.
Watch for the 1614 Cathedral of St George, Tartini Square, the Venetian Palace, the Town Hall, and 1st of May Square.
Continue past the famous saltpans at Selcovlje en route to the hilltop village of Padna, located between the coast and the Julian Alps. The village is famed for its olive oil and wine, as well as for the local crop of chard. Explore the town on foot, viewing a traditional Istrian house and the stone façade of St Blasius Church.
The Bozidar Jakac Gallery is dedicated to the life and work of the famous Slovenian expressionist painter.
Lining Padna’s streets are farmers' stalls offering tastes of traditional Istrian foods and food products. Sample sausages, family dishes, fruits, vegetables, preserves, olive oil and wine during your visit. Local musicians perform in the streets, playing lively Slovenian folk music.
Board your coach for the return to Koper.
Notes:
Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience. In Piran, streets are cobblestoned with up hills. Guests with limited mobility should take this into consideration before booking this tour.
