More than 2,000 years ago, Olympia was the birthplace of the sporting tradition that we now know as the Olympic Games. Millennia later, this tradition has found its renaissance in the modern version, but the very first games were held right here.
As you explore Olympia today, capturing the magical setting with your camera, you can almost hear the roar of the spectators, cheering on the athletes as they took their marks on the marble starting blocks. Photograph the ruins of temples, treasuries, porticoes and statues, and the Temple of Zeus with its now-lost forty-foot-tall statue of the god. All of these structures were an integral part of the city's glorious heyday. As you view the ruins, you'll find yourself mentally filling in the gaps with your imagination and your guide's explanation.
The sanctuary of Olympia is like a park -- beautifully photogenic -- much as it was when it was crowded with athletes, orators, merchants and philosophers. Take time to appreciate the extraordinary events and accomplishments that put Olympia on the map.
A brief visit to the modern village includes a refreshment stop at a local café .
