The village of Oia was almost destroyed in the 1956 earthquake but has been slowly restored. Its whitewashed houses and tiny churches cling tenaciously to the hillside, carved out of the slope of volcanic rock. The most picturesque of the two main village streets is paved with marble and lined with tiny shops, cafés, and restaurants, all waiting to be explored by you and your guide. If you prefer, you can set out on your own and lose yourself in the maze of tiny streets. The views from the cliff are quite amazing -- perhaps the best photo opportunity on this endlessly fascinating island.
Next, you will visit Vassaltis Winery, founded in 2016. Established with a commitment to showcasing the unique terroir of the region, Vassaltis Winery embraces the volcanic soil and the Aegean climate to produce exceptional wines. This state-of-the-art winery is situated in the off-the-beaten-path village of Vourvoulos, providing visitors with a picturesque setting to indulge in their exquisite wines. Vassaltis is renowned for its Assyrtiko grape variety, which thrives in the island’s volcanic soil, resulting in crisp and mineral-rich wines. The combination of traditional winemaking techniques and modern practices has allowed Vassaltis to craft wines that reflect the distinct character of Santorini. Your experience in the winery includes tastings of many of the winery’s signature bottles. The wines are perfectly paired with a tasting of local products.
Your tour ends at Thira Town, with a ten-minute walk down to the cable car station. Guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so but must make their own way back to the ship.
Notes:
Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, and steps. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking. Expect lines at the cable car; the wait can be more than 60 minutes if multiple ships are in port. Corkage policy: Wine purchased on this tour is exempt from the on-board corkage fee (offer limited to one bottle of wine per person).
