The charming countryside of Crete provides the backdrop to this pleasant half-day excursion. You will be exploring Mt Dikti in the easternmost of the three great mountain ranges of Crete.
From the pier, your coach will head inland, ascending to an elevation of 3,000 feet. Your journey passes through fertile countryside and many picturesque villages, typical of Crete, to the Lassithi Plateau.
The first stop on this magnificent mountain route will be at the Monastery of Kera, adorned with 14th-century wall paintings. Originally named Kardiotissa, the structure was built in the 17th century and is dedicated to the Virgin of Kera. The church contains lovely Byzantine icons. Continuing on, the route climbs through wooded villages to the plateau. Lassithi affords a breathtaking view of the encircling mountains dotted with the more than 100 picturesque windmills for which the area is famous.
Reaching the village of Tzermiado, enjoy a snack of some local treats and the warm hospitality of the local people before you head back to Iraklion.
Notes:
The windmills are private property; they may or may not be operating when you visit the plateau. The sails are sometimes removed from the windmills before inclement weather and may or may not be in place during your visit; the tour operator makes no guarantees in this regard.
