Depart from Haifa and journey to Nazareth, the village perched on a low hill overlooking a small valley nestled in the mountains of the Lower Galilee, where Jesus spent the hidden years of his childhood. Explore the Basilica of the Annunciation, one of Christendom’s most revered shrines and the largest church in the Middle East. It was built on the site where the Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would be the mother of the Messiah. Part of the grotto where Mary lived has been built into the altar, and outstanding mosaics of the Madonna and Child cover the walls on the second floor. Next, see the Church of Joseph, built over chambers that housed his carpentry shop. Walk through the Bazaar of Nazareth and pass the white stone fountain known as Mary’s Well where Jesus and his mother drew water.
Next, drive through Cana where Jesus performed his first miracle, turning water into wine. On your return to the vessel ascend Mount Carmel and enjoy a panoramic view overlooking the town of Haifa and its glistening bay, before returning to port.
Notes:
There is an approximately ¼ mile of slight uphill walk to the Church of Annunciation, and some steps inside. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Modest attire is required; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered.
