Depart Haifa pier for a one-hour drive through the Jezre’el Valley to Nazareth, the childhood home of Jesus. Nazareth is revered as the place where the archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary to herald the birth of Jesus. You will drive past the Church of the Annunciation, situated over ancient Byzantine and Crusader remains at the traditional site of the Virgin Mary’s house. Next you will pass the Church of St Joseph, believed to be the location of Joseph’s carpentry workshop. You will also see Mary’s Well, a modern stone structure whose water is believed to flow from a crypt inside the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation. Proceed to the Sea of Galilee, passing the village of Cana along the way, where Jesus turned water into wine. Drive to the Mount of the Beatitudes, site of the Sermon on the Mount. The lovely gardens surrounding the 20th-century church offer a view of the entire region, including the Golan Heights. Next, you will visit Tabgha, the site where Jesus miraculously multiplied the loaves and fish to feed 5,000 people. After enjoying a delightful lunch, which will feed a lot fewer than 5,000, visit Yardenit—the baptismal site on the Jordan River. The return drive to Haifa takes you to Mount Carmel, where vineyards covered the mountain in ancient times. During a photo stop at the summit, take in the beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea and Baha’i Gardens.
Notes:
Modest attire is required; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered. You will not visit the Church of the Annunciation on this tour.
