Set out with your guide on a walk through the narrow streets within the fortified Old Town of Monemvasia. The streets are so narrow that in many places it is almost single file.
Wind your way through lanes packed with houses and Byzantine churches. The latter are mostly in ruins, but a fortunate exception is the Church of Christ Chained to the Cross, which now serves as the island's cathedral. It dates to the 13th century AD, with alterations made during the Venetian occupation. Four surviving Byzantine icons are on display here. If you make the climb, the cliffside offers an ethereal view of the beautiful church of St Sofia. This 13th-century church is a rare example of the domed octagonal design. Once at the top, the view of the sea and the houses of the lower town is a truly memorable sight.
Notes:
The terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, gravel, and many steps. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability before booking. Participants must be physically fit.
