Drive westward along the coast to the small town of Ston — the oyster capital of Croatia. This tiny town is often called "Little Dubrovnik," as it, too, is surrounded by magnificent City Walls. These date back to 1317 and were completed in the 16th century, making them one of the longest defensive walls in the world.
In Croatia, the name Ston is synonymous with oysters, as oyster farms surround the whole area. Ston was a major fort of the Ragusan Republic, whose defensive walls were regarded as a notable feat of medieval architecture.
Its former value as a salt city is reaffirmed today with the oldest active salt works in the world. These saltworks have remained faithful to the tradition and the natural way of salt production, which has remained unchanged since ancient times.
Continue to Mali Ston and board a local boat that will take you to oyster and mussel beds. Your host welcomes you aboard and offers an introduction to the oyster and mussel farming industry. Taste freshly harvested shellfish and savor the famous local dish, Buzara, featuring mussels, before returning to the ship.
