Discover Caravaca -- the fifth holiest city in the world for the Catholic Church, ranked after Santiago de Compostela, Santo Toribio de Liébana, Rome and Jerusalem.
A panoramic drive of 1½ to 1¾ hours brings you to Caravaca. Stroll the ancient streets of the city and walk uphill to the fortress, which seems to materialize right in front of you. Muslim in origin, the castle was extended by the Knights Templar and the Santiago Order.
The religious dimension of Caravaca has evolved over the course of centuries, so it is not surprising that it is comprised of an unusual blend of all the cultures, military forces, artists and philosophers who have inhabited the city since the Middle Ages. Visit the 16th- and 17th-century Sanctuary of Vera Cruz and the Museum of Religious Art & History, which is also housed in this amazing heritage site.
The Church of El Salvador and the Town Hall architecturally exemplify an eclectic mix that is culturally represented by the Muslims & Christians Festival held every May. You will visit the Festival Museum to learn about the internationally-famous Running of the Wine Horses celebration held here in May.
Enjoy a lunch of typical regional fare and drive back to Cartagena.
Notes:
Travel time to Caravaca is 1½ to 1¾ hours each way.
