Attention garden-lovers, this one's for you! Elche is located one hour from Alicante and boasts an amazing microclimate that has enabled the creation of one of the largest palm forests in southern Europe, with nearly 250 000 palm trees. Commercial palm plantations are not financially viable here, so it is rare to find so many palms in one place.
The Palmeral de Elche is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Municipal Park to learn more about the different local species, and why there are so many palms here.
The highlight of your tour will be crossing the threshold of the Huerto del Cura -- the Priest's Garden which dates to 1918. With more than 300 types of plants, this garden offers a perfect opportunity to relax and connect with nature.
You'll have free time to stroll at your leisure and taste some local specialties (at your own expense). Date palms are the most common variety here, don't miss the Elisabeth Palm named after the Empress Sissi, the Imperial palm tree with many branches.
Notes: Travel time to Elche is approximately one hour each way. An audio headset is included to enhance your tour experience.
