Embark on a leisurely excursion by air-conditioned coach to two of southern Italy's most interesting cities.
In Bari, you'll find a bustling metropolis dotted with popular shops and restaurants. The Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Normans all took advantage of Bari's strategic location, and the Crusaders often sailed from Bari in the Middle Ages. In the Old Town, explore winding streets with medieval structures such as the Basilica of St Nicolas (1087). Inside, there's an elaborate stone canopy over the altar and a 900-year-old bishop's throne made of marble.
Another resplendent church awaits in the nearby town of Trani. Dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim, the Trani Cathedral is acclaimed as one of the most magnificent churches in Italy. Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, it sits very charmingly at the water's edge.
A stroll through Trani's Old Town is a great way to acquaint yourself with the whitewashed buildings that curve around the little fishing harbor's scenic bay. And don't miss the well-preserved Swabian Castle that dates to 1249, considered one of the most sophisticated secular buildings of the Middle Ages. Enjoy some free time to wander about this lovely town, stroll along the cobblestone streets, watch the boats unload their daily catch, or sit at a café with a cup of espresso (at your own expense) and people-watch.
