Barcelona's modernist architecture, conceived and executed by architect Antonio Gaudí, has ensured Barcelona's place in the world today, on the map, and heading in the future. This tour offers an insight view to the modernism as its best.
Begin with a panoramic drive along one of Europe's best-known boulevards -- the Passeig de Gràcia. As you travel, your guide will point out the best examples of modernism -- Casa Batlló and Casa Mila (La Pedrera) -- both encapsulating Gaudí's extraordinary style and both explained in more detail later in the tour.
Your destination is Sagrada Familia Cathedral (the Holy Family Church) -- perhaps Gaudí's most famous work and still a work-in-progress. Under construction since 1888, was consecrated in 2010, as a basilica, by Pope Benedict XIV. It draws millions of visitors every year and is one of the most cherished monuments in Spain. The impressive height of the ceilings, the play of light and color and its bio-forms make this structure quite unique on a world scale. Your guide will explain its meaning, significance and importance from the outside as well as from the inside.
To finish off your Gaudí experience, head back to Passeig de Gràcia in the city center. You'll pass various works of Gaudí en route, and this time you'll stop outside La Pedrera so your guide can tell you more about this extraordinary apartment building.
It's just a brief walk along Barcelona's boutique boulevard to the outside of Casa Batlló. This building features a bizarrely beautiful 'dragon's-back' roofline and your guide will tell you about its unique interior architecture as well, before you return to the ship.
