Discover Kauai's ancient and recent past, as well as some significant archeological sites and sacred treasures.
Begin with the majesty of Opaeka'a Falls -- an 80-foot tiered waterfall. Opaeka'a means rolling shrimp and, indeed, the waterfall was named after the delicious crustaceans that were once abundant here.
Drive through Wailua Complex of Heiaus, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962. This was the exclusive and sacred home, sanctuary and center of government for Kauai's Hawaiian royalty and chiefs. It contains the remains of many significant structures including Poli'ahu Heiau -- a temple that was in regular use when Captain James Cook visited Kauai in 1778.
Head to the historical Kilohana Plantation, established in 1864 and managed by Gaylord Wilcox -- Kauai's famous sugar baron. Your adventure here involves the Kauai Plantation Railway, with a 40-minute fun and informative conductor-narrated train ride through 105 acres of Kilohana Plantation. Watch for fruit-tree orchards, sugarcane, pineapple, banana, papaya, and numerous other exotic fruit and indigenous trees. The train will stop for you to hop off and feed the friendly pigs, goats and sheep.
Explore Kilohana Manor -- Kauai's largest sugar estate mansion, built in 1935 -- and its grounds. Browse in the beautiful shops here.
Notes:
Kilohana Manor House is closed on Sundays; shopping at Hilo Hattie will be substituted.
