Discover how a small coastal colonial village in Chile has achieved UNESCO World Heritage Site status. UNESCO says, "Valparaíso is an exceptional testimony to the early phase of globalization in the late 19th century, when it became the leading commercial port on the sea routes of the Pacific coast of South America."
Begin at the old Customs building (1855) and explore the historic quarter (Old Town).
You will stop at the main square—Plaza Sotomayor—and see Monument to the Heroes of Iquique (1888).
A visit to the Fine Arts Museum gives you a chance to view its collections. It is housed in the former Palacio Zanelli (1916). Take a panoramic drive through the city, and up one of the hills to admire the view of the bay.
At Villa Victoria, the Valparaíso Heritage Interpretative Center showcases how the port developed into the leading commercial port of the region. Villa Victoria opened in June 2014, after a significant restoration project. Once the home of the wealthiest woman in Valparaíso, the house operated as a bakery in the 20th century. Now that its original glamor has been restored, the museum within will introduce you to the cultural change that has come with globalization, as well as elements of the historic workshops and antique tools that supported the maritime industry. Afterwards, enjoy tea or coffee with fresh-baked, handmade pastries at a local restaurant.
Transfer to the airport in Santiago or to the Sheraton Santiago Hotel.
