Snorkeling above a volcano is on many a bucket list. Check it off yours today with some snorkeling at Champagne Reef. This area is known for its volcanic activity and is ranked one of the top snorkeling venues in the world.
Heading to the Soufriere Scottshead Marine Reserve, the coastline offers dramatic views of lush mountains soaring to the clouds and scattered quaint fishing villages sleepily sitting on the ocean's edge.
Hop into the water and follow the snorkel guide, who will provide the names of species of fish and coral life. The reef drops to about 50 feet to the west -- a dramatic plunge that attracts plenty of marine life.
The snorkeling ends close to shore, atop vents that pump hot water from the seabed. The bubbles emerging from the vent make you feel like you are swimming through a glass of sparkling wine.
Notes:
Minimum age is 8 years. Wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, reef-safe/biodegradable sunscreen, light clothing to act as a full cover-up for further protection from the sun, and a hat. Swim at your own risk. Guests with heart conditions, epilepsy, diabetes or asthma are not allowed to participate. Waiver must be signed and medical conditions disclosed. The walk to the beach is over uneven gravel and stones.
