Depart the pier and drive along the National Highway towards Mtubatuba; then continue north to Dumazulu, which means 'Thundering Zulu'.
Explore the culture and traditions of the Zulu tribe during this informative visit to the Dumazulu Traditional Village.
It is home to more than fifty Zulu residents and forms part of a living museum. Dumazulu is the largest Zulu village of its kind in the southern hemisphere, and is the only Zulu village to be opened up to tourism by King Goodwill Zwelithini, who placed the Royal Zulu stamp of approval on the objectives and authenticity of Dumazulu.
Upon arrival, meet your Zulu guides, who will invite you into the chief's homestead, or kraal. Here, you have the opportunity to observe and learn more about the various Zulu traditions, including basket-weaving, spear- and shield-making, beadwork, pot-making, sangoma (spiritual healer) bone-throwing, and spectacular, brilliant, colorful Zulu dancing.
Return to Richards Bay wiser and more knowledgeable about the Zulu people of Africa.
Notes:
Vula Zulu is a depiction of historical Zulu life and should be seen as a show. It is Zulu custom for young, unmarried women to go topless. The village has mostly gravel ground, which can be slightly muddy after heavy rain. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring a sunhat, sunscreen and sunglasses. Most of the tour takes place outdoors and requires quite a lot of walking. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Photography or video of the sangoma (traditional healer) is not allowed.
