The fascination of the convict era and the dramatic coastal scenery of Tasmania come to life on the scenic Tasman Peninsula as you view some of the extraordinary geological features of this area.
Departing by coach, you will travel over the forested peninsula to Eaglehawk Neck -- a narrow isthmus that connects the peninsula to the rest of Tasmania. Stop here for a short walk to view the Port Arthur Historic Site's Tessellated Pavement, the Officers' Quarters and the Dog Line, where savage dogs once guarded the isthmus to prevent convicts escaping from Port Arthur.
At the Pirates Bay Lookout, you will take in spectacular views of the stunning coastline and beautiful beaches with white sand, blue water and rugged, rocky cliffs. You'll encounter some of the more unusual features of the peninsula.
At the blow hole, a weak spot in the rock has eroded to the very top layer so that when the waves build up pressure, they spray the water through the hole, similar to a whale's spout.
The Devil's Kitchen and the Tasman Arch (you will visit one or the other; not both) are natural rock formations located high above the ocean on top of rugged cliffs. These geological features are nature's marvels, whose softer rock layers have been eroded by the sea, leaving the stronger top layers withstanding the forces of nature.
Return to the ship at Port Arthur.
