For those obsessed with tea, or the merely curious, the Tea Route offers a gastronomic and cultural journey showcasing various facets of traditional and colonial Mauritius.
Visit Domain Aubineaux — one of the few remaining colonial mansions from the 19th century. It is in the highlands, and a docent introduces you to the house, which was built in 1872. See furniture dating from the East India Company, a fine collection of period photographs, the former stables, and an essential oils distillery.
After a break in the tea lounge, enjoy the floral park and visit the Garden of Camphor. Exotic plants and endemic trees thrive here.
Continue by coach to Bois Cheri and the tea factory, where you will learn about the various stages of production and visit the tea museum.
Head to the cottage for a tea tasting along with local delicacies and panoramic views.
Follow the Rivière des Anguilles to St Aubin and visit a colonial house built in 1819 — once the residence of the director of the sugar estate. It is now a table d'hôte restaurant and offers a typically Mauritian lunch. The property harvests cane for sugar and rum production. A visit to the rum distillery is included.
At La Maison de la Vanille, you will discover the long process of transforming vanilla orchids into essence.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses, wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Tour does not operate on Sundays or holidays.
