Explore the lively city of Mindelo -- Cape Verde's second-largest city and the archipelago's historical and cultural center.
Motorcoach transportation drops you off in the downtown core. You'll walk with your guide to view some of Mindelo's landmarks. Stroll past a collection of low-rise, pastel-colored colonial buildings en route to the fish market. The catch of the day is snapped up by families and restaurants, with little time elapsing between it leaving the ocean and ending up on a lunch platter.
Walk through the African Market (vegetable market), past the statue of Diogo Afonso and the Torre de Belem Monument, and through Praça Estrella Square.
Step inside the Nossa Senhora de Luz Church. You'll also view the Town Hall from the outside and cross Lisbon Street to discover the musical heart of Mindelo in a guitar workshop. Music buffs will appreciate a few minutes to browse in the CD store.
Head to lunch at a local restaurant about 100 yards away, featuring traditional Verdean food.
Then, set out to discover the island's landscape and nature with a hike to a local fishing village. Pause here for the all-important activity of drinking coffee among the locals. It's a great slice of Cape Verdean life.
Your motorcoach will pick you up for a drive to the famous and beautiful Baia das Gatas Beach.
From the viewpoint on Monte Verde, you can see the stunning landforms of the islands before you head back to the ship.
Notes:
There are steps at the vegetable market, and you will visit the second floor. There is no elevator. Tourism infrastructure is limited in Cape Verde; coaches typically do not have air-conditioning or a PA system. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Views are weather permitting. Tour does not operate on weekends or holidays.
