Heading southward along the picturesque coastline, you'll pass through charming seashore towns and arrive at the second-largest city on the island -- St-Pierre.
Transitioning from the West, you'll venture into the cattle-rearing plains. Let yourself be captivated by extraordinary landscapes that shift from vibrant green to a surreal, almost lunar setting. Your first stop within this volcanic landscape is at Nez le Boeuf for a breathtaking view of the volcanic ravine and the flower-filled countryside.
From here, a short drive brings you to the volcanic crater at Pas de Bellecombe, perched at an impressive 7,582 feet above sea level. Peer down into the crater of the active Piton de la Fournaise Volcano; this mesmerizing panorama is often veiled in mysterious clouds.
Dine on a typical Creole lunch at a local restaurant and sample the dish known as the "Carry."
Return to the ship, enriched by the natural wonders and culture of Réunion.
Notes:
Piton de La Fournaise is a very active volcano and erupts frequently. Participate at your own risk. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Terrain includes uneven surfaces, steep inclines and steps. Wear sturdy closed-toe walking shoes, long pants in stretch fabric, and a breathable t-shirt or active wear top. The dress code is mandatory; for safety reasons, the guide may refuse entry to those inadequately dressed. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Mist and cloud often surround the higher peaks, plains and crater; they lift, drop and swirl during the day and can affect views; no guarantee is offered concerning visibility or views. Travel time to the volcano is approximately 90 - 120 minutes.
