There are three main volcanoes on Easter Island; Ma'unga Terevaka is the tallest at 1,700 feet. Bring your stamina to tackle it on this exhilarating hike.
Begin your day with a panoramic drive to the Vaitea area -- center of Easter Island's sheep-farming industry in the 19th century.
Set out on your uphill trek from here, walking up a steep gradient to the top of the volcano. Dominating the center of the island, Mount Terevaka boasts jaw-dropping panoramic vistas set off by the deep blue Pacific Ocean gleaming on the horizon.
After filling your camera with trophy photos, begin the trek back down to the motorcoach.
On your way back to the pier, you will pass Ahu Akivi with its seven statues, all directly facing the sunset during the spring and autumn equinoxes.
Notes:
Minimum age is 12 years. This tour is for guests who are physically fit and are able to trek for long distances uphill over several hours. Please realistically assess your fitness level before booking. Wear sturdy walking shoes. Easter Island has a hot and humid climate. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Walking is over uneven terrain at the volcano. Tourism infrastructure is very limited on Easter Island. Transportation will be by way of several different types of vehicle, including minibuses and vans. A guide waits for you at each point of interest and provides narration and explanation with a loudspeaker rather than riding with you in the vehicle. The ship is at anchor on Easter Island, and the Immigration clearance process can take more than an hour. Having your immigration card filled in prior to arrival will expedite the process. Very few vendors on Easter Island accept credit cards; bring US dollars or Chilean pesos.
