Nordic walking is a total-body workout version of walking that can be enjoyed both by non-athletes as a health-promoting physical activity and by athletes as a sport. The activity is performed with specially-designed walking poles. The technique is easy to learn, and you will get a great workout where most muscles are used, combined with a true nature experience.
Begin your walk passing through Haugesund's city center. Watch for Our Saviour's Church, the City Park, and Skåre Church en route to the coastal hiking trail.
Haraldshaugen, mentioned in Snorre's sagas, is where King Harald Fairhair is buried; it is also where Norway's National Monument of Unification (1872) stands as part of the millennial celebrations to mark Norway's unification as one country.
Further north on the hiking trail, you'll reach the famous Rising Tide sculpture. This tidal work, based loosely on the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, is quite compelling.
Next, enjoy one of Norway's best-loved culinary treats -- brown cheese. Together with rye bread and refreshing beverages, this constitutes a typical Norwegian back-to-basics trail snack. Is it an acquired taste? Some people think so.
On your way back to the pier, walk through some residential areas and around the inner quay of Haugesund.
Notes:
Terrain includes hiking trails, paved surfaces and cobblestone streets. Participants must be able to hike approximately 4.5 miles (8km). Wear comfortable walking shoes.
