A lonely lighthouse perched upon a rocky shore is a familiar sight along Norway's rugged coastline. An important navigation tool for sailors, all lighthouses once used an open flame to help mariners find their way to land.
Journey north through the picturesque countryside to Mølstrevåg; then, follow your guide on a walk along a gravel road for about 30 minutes (one mile) each way. Breathe in the cool, crisp air along the North Sea Trail that links seven Northern European countries around the North Sea. Watch for the occasional seal climbing out of the water to warm itself on the rocks at the bottom of the cliff.
You're headed to the Ryvarden Lighthouse, built on the site of a stone fireplace from AD 869 and completely automated in 1984. During your walk, your guide will share details about its operation and legacy. Established in 1849, it is one of 212 lighthouses in Norway. You may be surprised by its classic good looks -- its white 33-foot-tall square wooden tower is topped with a red lantern. It now houses an art gallery and museum.
With a little time to yourself, you can relax with a refreshing beverage, visit the gallery, or gaze out over the promontory. You'll understand why this landmark building has remained dear to the Norwegians for more than 165 years.
Notes:
One hour of walking is required. Terrain includes a gravel road.
