Carnival is South America's version of Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday. Here's your chance to go behind the scenes at Samba City and learn more about this extravagant, noisy holiday that brings the entire continent to a standstill. At the Grande Rio Youth Samba School, learn about how this non-governmental organization promotes social interaction and education through the culture of Carnival. Your guide will walk you through the steps to assemble a Carnival float, explain the creative process, show you how Carnival costumes are prepared, and reveal how the floats are organized. You'll see some of the floats from prior years. Feel free to don a Carnival costume and take photos.
You'll travel through the historical streets of the Little Africa district for a glimpse of Rio's Afro-Brazilian cultural ties.
Notes:
This tour is available only to guests whose cruise does not begin or end in Rio de Janeiro. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. There are many stairs in the warehouse. The Samba School occasionally closes without notice -- an unavoidable cultural challenge; the tour cost will be refunded in this event.
