Experience the lifestyle, customs, food, music and dance of the Xhosa people at an authentic re-creation of a traditional village.
Depart on a scenic drive through East London, passing Orient and Eastern Beaches. Heading out of the city, enjoy views of rolling hills, farmland and traditional Xhosa villages en route to Khaya La Bantu Open-Air Xhosa Cultural Museum.
The museum is situated on 1,100 acres in the Eastern Cape bush. Upon arrival, your Xhosa hosts will welcome you and invite you to join them at their community center, constructed using traditional materials and methods. Here, you will be introduced to local customs and rituals, have a chance to shop for a variety of handicrafts, sample local foods and enjoy a performance of tribal dancing, singing and drumming.
Next, take a guided walk through the village to see the kraal - a group of huts with enclosures that house cattle, pigs, goats or chickens and where important tribal matters are discussed. Touring the village, you are welcome to peer into the huts, as your hosts explain their purpose and the techniques used to build them.
After your introduction to local culture, return to the pier.
Notes:
Bring local currency, as vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Dress in layers and wear comfortable walking shoes. Wear sunglasses and sunscreen. Bring a hat. Participants must negotiate stairs and/or uneven surfaces and is therefore not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations.
