This tour is tailor-made for those interested in culture, human interaction, history and sociology. It represents your chance to understand African history in a global context, as well as African art and culture just for the sheer fun of it.
Head off the beaten track to discover different types of art -- antique and modern African art in the form of masks, wood carvings and sculpture -- by visiting the Gallery Antena, the IFAN Museum and the Cathedral of African Memories. The latter incorporates Sudano-Sahelian architecture.
Then, after a drive along the West Corniche, you'll explore the De Casa Sand Paintings Gallery, where you can watch the artists at work using hundreds of different naturally-colored sands from all over Africa. This is quite impressive -- as brightly creative as it is quietly inspiring.
You will visit the Monument of African Renaissance, the Mamelles Lighthouse and the Mosque of Divinity (the Deidy Mosque).
Driving through the Les Almadies residential area, you will arrive at a traditional African restaurant. Enjoy a beverage and visit the adjacent gallery before lunch .
The Villages des Arts exhibits the work of more than 100 artists, each with his/her own small gallery. Feel free to interact with the artists as you browse among their work.
Notes:
Transportation is basic compared to the transportation you will find elsewhere. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here, and you are trading breadth of experience for authentic interaction. Please bring your spirit of adventure and bear with any language difficulties your guide may encounter and with any operational surprises that may crop up.
