Turn inland to the countryside and cross the fertile Campidano Plain, passing through cornfields and vineyards, and through the village of Villamar, with its mural-covered houses illustrating everyday life in Sardinia.
Your destination is Barumini -- a small village situated in the center of Sardinia. Here you will find the island's most important archaeological site -- the megalithic Nuraghic complex of Su Nuraxi. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was re-discovered 1950. It consists of circular defensive towers in the form of truncated cones built of stone, with corbel-vaulted internal chambers. Historians believe the fortification was strengthened around 500 BC when the Nuraghic Civilization became aware of the Carthaginian threat. This is the finest and most complete example of prehistoric architecture on the island.
Return to Cagliari for a panoramic tour of the city center, the ancient city walls and a photo stop at the viewpoint for a magnificent view of the town and the bay.
Notes:
In the event of rain, the Nuraghic complex of Su Nuraxi will be closed; a visit to Casa Zapata will be substituted.
