Depart the ship for an approximately two-hour drive to the small coastal village of El Alamein, approximately 110 miles west of Alexandria. El Alamein is most famous for being the scene of a decisive Allied victory over the Axis powers during World War II. Upon arrival, proceed to the El Alamein War Museum, located on the western side of town. The museum contains a collection of uniforms, memorabilia and pictorial material relating to the Battle of El Alamein and the North Africa campaigns in general. There is also a diorama display that shows the main paths of advance and retreat until the Axis forces surrendered to the Allies in Tunis in 1943. Outside the museum, there is a collection of tanks, artillery, and hardware.
Continue to the Commonwealth War Cemetery. There are more than 7,000 tombstones overlooking the desert battlefield of El Alamein. Those buried here are soldiers from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, France, and India, who fought and died for the Allied cause. Outside of the cemetery is a small separate memorial to the Australians, and a little further east is a Greek War Memorial.
At the end of the tour, board the motorcoach for the return journey back to Alexandria and the ship.
