Agadir, situated at the foot of the Atlas mountain range, suffered a devastating earthquake in 1962, which destroyed many of the city's historical buildings. Since then, it has resurrected itself as a modern holiday resort town, supported by more than 300 days of sunshine per year.
Leave the ship and set out by coach to the Kasbah Agadir Oufella and viewpoint, also home to the ancient fort, built in 1540. On its front gate, notice the Dutch inscription, "Fear God and honor thy King."
Leave the coach to explore the Kasbah, where local guides point out the various attractions and explain the history of the city from this spectacular viewpoint.
A short drive down the hill brings you to the Berber market of Souk Al Had. Here, among the maze of souks (markets), you will have time to shop for everything from carpets to fine handicrafts.
Notes:
Monuments, museums, souks, and shops are closed on religious holidays. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Daytime temperatures are high. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Bring along local currency (for shopping). Do not take photos of military personnel without their consent. Be mindful of your belongings at all times, particularly at tourist points of interest or in crowded places.
