Cesar Manrique was born in Arrecife in 1919. He began his studies at La Laguna and continued at La Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de Madrid.
The Jardin de Cactus -- the last work of Cesar Manrique -- is a symbol of the island's history with more than 10,000 cacti set in a converted amphitheatre-like quarry. Cochineal beetles live in the cacti, and their larvae are used to produce the natural food coloring of the same name.
Jameos del Agua is yet another of Manrique's beautifully landscaped architectural pieces. View the entry point to the longest underwater Atlantic Sea cavern, as well as endemic miniature blind crabs only found here on Lanzarote. Admire tropical rock gardens, a pool, the theater, and the House of Volcanoes Research Center.
