Lanzarote is unlike any other place in the world. Two hundred seventy years ago, massive volcanic eruptions sent contorted lava flows across three-fourths of the island’s 324-square-mile surface. Today, this affected area is a designated National Park and an essential visit for anyone exploring Lanzarote.
Begin your journey by passing through charming, traditional villages before arriving at an aloe vera farm. Here, discover the extraordinary properties of this resilient plant and learn how Lanzarote’s volcanic soil and unique climate contribute to the cultivation of high-quality aloe, renowned for its healing and cosmetic benefits.
Next, continue to one of nature’s most fascinating wonders--Montaña de Fuego, or the Mountain of Fire, in Timanfaya National Park. At Islote de Hilario, witness a captivating demonstration of the geothermal energy beneath your feet, where volcanic cinders just below the surface are hot enough to ignite wood and produce steam--clear evidence of the powerful forces still at work beneath the earth’s crust. Even today, heat rises through vents in the ground, a lingering effect of the dramatic eruptions that shaped the island between 1730 and 1736.
Since rainfall is scarce, local farmers have developed ingenious cultivation techniques to grow crops in fields of black lava, where moisture from sea mist sustains the plants. Grape vines flourish in cinder pits known as zocos, with porous lava granules allowing dew to reach the roots. This unique method produces Malvasía, a fresh, golden wine distinctive to the island.
Enjoy a wine tasting at La Geria, Lanzarote’s renowned wine country, before returning to the port.
