If a single place can be said to lie at the center of English history and embodies the romantic vision of the heartland, it is Winchester -- a beautiful city surrounded by meadows and rolling chalk downs.
Walk to the 13th-century Winchester Great Hall, home to one of the best-known symbols of medieval mythology -- King Arthur’s Round Table. The table hangs in the Great Hall of Henry VIII. The Hall was originally built for William the Conqueror in 1067 after the Norman Conquest. Since then, it has witnessed many major events, including the trial of Sir Walter Raleigh, whereby he was sentenced to death. The adjacent buildings contain an exhibition corridor and a gift shop, which you will have time to visit.
Explore the center of the ancient and royal city of Winchester on your own. This was the original home of William the Conqueror’s great Domesday Book. You may wish to visit (at your own expense) the Great Hall to view the Round Table of King Arthur. This is also the place where Walter Raleigh was tried and sentenced to death.
Winchester’s shopping streets include an array of independent shops, boutiques and galleries with brand-name stores.
Notes:
Travel time to Winchester is approximately one hour each way. Lunch is not included. You will have time to purchase lunch at your own expense during the tour. Entrance to the cathedral is not included.
